Introduction
RideMeter is a GPS activity tracker for cycling, running and walking. Recording a ride needs no account, and nothing about it leaves your phone. Two features are exceptions, and you opt into both: Strava sync, which uploads the activities you choose to your own Strava account, and the GPS tracker for your bike, which does have an account and does keep your tracker's positions on a server we run. Both are described below.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the app accesses, how it is used, and the choices you have. By using RideMeter, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Information We Collect
Recording rides collects nothing about you. That part of the app needs no account, no sign-up and no registration, and we do not collect your name, email address, phone number or any other identifying information for it.
During active ride tracking, the app accesses the following data from your device's sensors:
- GPS location (latitude and longitude)
- Speed
- Distance traveled
- Ride duration
- Route path
- Altitude (used to calculate elevation gain and loss)
- Compass heading
- Step count — during Walk and Run only, from the step sensor in the phone or the watch. A Ride never reads it.
- Heart rate, and the calories calculated from it — on the watch only, and only while an activity is being recorded.
This data is generated and stored entirely on your device. It is never sent to any server we operate. The only exception is the optional Strava Integration described below, which uploads selected ride data directly to your own Strava account when you turn it on.
Two of those move differently from the rest, and it is worth being exact. Steps travel with the activity when a watch hands it to the phone. Heart rate and the calories derived from it do not: they stay on the watch that measured them, because the phone's own records have no column for either. Neither reaches a server we operate.
If you use a GPS tracker
The tracker is the one feature with an account behind it, because a tracker's location has to reach you and nobody else. From the moment you sign in, we hold the following on a server we operate:
- Your sign-in. The phone number or Google account you sign in with is held by Firebase Authentication, Google's service, on our behalf. Our own service never stores the number itself — only a one-way keyed digest of your sign-in, and a label showing its last four digits so a support request can be matched to an account.
- Your tracker, and where it has been. Its IMEI, the name you give it, and the positions it reports: latitude, longitude, time and speed. Positions older than 180 days are deleted automatically.
- Sharing. Which accounts you have let watch which bike, and the invitations you have issued.
- Alerts. The alert rules you switch on, and a push notification token for each phone you want notified.
All of it can be deleted from Profile → Delete account in the app. Deleting your account sets out exactly what goes, and what is not ours to delete.
How We Use Your Data
The ride data accessed by RideMeter is used solely to:
- Display real-time ride statistics (speed, distance, duration) while you ride
- Record your route on a map
- Show your ride history and statistics within the app
- Power Live Activities on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island during active rides
Data Storage
Ride data is stored locally on your device. There is no cloud storage and no remote database for your rides: they are not uploaded, synced or shared anywhere unless you turn on Strava sync.
They stay under your control — delete a single ride in the app, or uninstall it to remove all of them at once.
Tracker data is the exception, and the one place RideMeter runs a server. It travels over an encrypted connection, encrypted backups of it are kept for 30 days before they rotate away, and tracker positions older than 180 days are deleted automatically. Everything else goes the moment you delete your account — see Data Deletion below.
Location Permissions
RideMeter requests access to your device's location services to track your rides. The app may use location in two modes:
- While Using the App — location is accessed when the app is open and a ride is in progress.
- Background Location — location is accessed in the background to continue tracking your ride when the app is not in the foreground (e.g., when your screen is locked).
Your phone's location is used for ride tracking and nothing else, and it never reaches a server we operate — the one way it leaves your phone is Strava sync, which you turn on yourself. The tracker on your bike is separate: its positions come from the tracker itself, not from this phone. You can revoke location permissions at any time through your device's Settings.
Live Activities
RideMeter supports Live Activities to display ride information on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. This feature shows real-time ride data such as speed, distance, and duration directly on your device's display.
Live Activities operate entirely on-device and do not send any data to external servers.
Strava Integration
Strava sync is opt-in. Nothing is sent to Strava unless you explicitly connect your Strava account. You can disconnect at any time from Settings → Strava.
RideMeter can optionally upload your completed rides to Strava so they appear on your Strava profile alongside rides you record with other apps or devices. This feature is provided by Strava, Inc.
When you tap Connect with Strava, the app opens Strava's official login page in a secure web view. You sign in with your Strava credentials directly on Strava's servers — RideMeter never sees your Strava password. On success, Strava sends back an authorization token that the app stores in the device Keychain.
While connected, the following data is transmitted from your device to Strava when a ride is synced:
- The ride's GPS track (latitude, longitude, timestamps, and altitude) as a standard GPX file
- An activity name (you can rename it on Strava afterwards)
- The activity type — always set to Ride
Once connected, Auto-sync is turned on by default so each completed ride is uploaded automatically. You can turn Auto-sync off, manually sync individual rides from the ride summary, or disconnect Strava entirely from the Settings screen. Disconnecting deletes the stored Strava token from your device; it does not delete activities already uploaded to Strava.
Once a ride is uploaded, it is governed by your Strava account settings and Strava's own privacy policy. To remove an uploaded activity you must delete it from Strava. For details on how Strava handles your data, see the Strava Privacy Policy.
Third-Party Services
RideMeter integrates with a single third-party service: Google AdMob, used to display advertisements (see Advertising below). Aside from this, the app contains:
- No analytics or tracking SDKs
- No crash reporting services
- No social media integrations
Advertising
RideMeter is free to download and use. To support ongoing development and keep the app free for everyone, RideMeter displays advertisements served by Google AdMob, a mobile advertising service provided by Google LLC.
The Google AdMob SDK may access certain non-personal device information — such as your device's advertising identifier (only if you allow tracking via Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt), language, country, device model, and approximate location derived from your IP address — in order to deliver and measure ads. This information is handled by Google in accordance with their own privacy policy.
For details on how Google collects and uses data through AdMob, see Google's Advertising Policies and Google's Privacy Policy. You can also limit ad tracking at any time by going to Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking on your device and disabling "Allow Apps to Request to Track", or by managing tracking permission for RideMeter individually.
To remove all advertisements from the app, you can purchase a Premium subscription. See In-App Purchases & Subscriptions below for pricing and details.
In-App Purchases & Subscriptions
RideMeter is free to use and supported by ads. To remove ads and unlock premium features, you can purchase one of the following auto-renewable subscriptions:
- Monthly Premium (1 month) — $1.99/month
- Yearly Premium (1 year) — $14.99/year
Prices are listed in U.S. dollars and may vary by region. The actual price will be as displayed in the App Store at the time of purchase.
Payment will be charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.
Subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
Subscriptions may be managed by the user, and auto-renewal may be turned off by going to the user's Apple ID Account Settings after purchase.
For details on how we handle your data, please refer to this Privacy Policy.
Data Deletion
You are in full control of your data. You can delete any individual ride record at any time by swiping to delete within the app. Uninstalling RideMeter will also remove all associated data from your device.
If you have signed in to use a GPS tracker, that account is the one thing RideMeter keeps on a server, and it can be deleted too — from Profile → Delete account in the app, which removes the account, the trackers on it and their location history. Deleting your account sets out exactly what goes, what is not ours to delete, and how to ask if you no longer have the app.
Children's Privacy
RideMeter is not directed at children. Recording rides collects nothing personal from anyone, at any age. The GPS tracker account needs a phone number or a Google account, and we do not knowingly create one for a child under 13 — if you believe a child has signed in, write to us and we will delete the account and its data.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
